THERAPEUTIC EXERCISES
We use several types of exercises to help:

Build strength.  You would be instructed in exercises that work muscles against some form of resistance (gravity, weights, theraband, etc.)

Increase range of motion.  We teach you specific exercises depending on which joints are giving you difficulty.

Decrease pain from sustained postures.  We’ll instruct you in postural exercises to help decrease your pain that results from lower back, upper back, and neck problems.

Promote flexibility.   By doing stretching exercises, you can help prevent or relieve muscle contractions or spasm.

Increase muscle endurance.   Exercises will help you work harder and longer with home or work-related tasks.

Improve your balance and coordination.  We will teach you exercises to gain or regain motor function and basic muscle control.

Fight chronic pain.  Exercise can help you improve your well-being and self-esteem, feel fit and enjoy a higher level of independence.

MODALITIES
We use the following modalities to achieve patient goals:

Manual therapy: A licensed therapist mobilizes specific joints to regain altered joint alignment, reduce mechanical blocks in the joint (for example, meniscus), and increase motion restricted by pain.

Electrical stimulation: This type of modality is used to relieve pain, re-educate muscle contractions, decrease swelling, decrease/inhibit muscle spasms, and promote tissue healing.  Electric currents are also used to dispense anti-inflammatory drugs through the skin to joints and soft tissues.

Traction: Application of a mechanical force for the effects of increasing joint distraction, reduction of disc protrusion/herniation, decrease pinched nerve roots, increase soft tissue stretching (for example, ligament, tendon & muscle), inhibit muscle spasm, and decreasing joint pain.

Ultrasound: Type of sound wave to increase tissue temperature to increase circulation, increase extensibility of soft tissues, control pain, decrease muscle spasm, and accelerate metabolic rate of healing cells.  The non-thermal effect is enhanced tissue healing.

Cold & Heat Application:  Thermal effects of cold include control of inflammation, edema & pain.  Thermal effects of heat include increased local circulation, increased pain threshold, increased range of motion, and decreased joint stiffness.

Compression:  Controlled application of external compression can reduce swelling, increase tissue temperature, and control hypertrophic scarring.
